Degree Programs > Arts & Sciences > Kapi'olani Information Technology Emphasis (KITE) Kapi'olani Information Technology Emphasis (KITE)The Kapi'olani Information Technology Emphasis (KITE) helps students and faculty utilize the college environment which has a strong networked infrastructure. Students can use their on-campus and system-wide access to technology services to be successful and productive in college, to be competitive in the workforce, and to become life-long information age learners. Students take online and hybrid courses which require interaction outside of class through computer networks. Testing, web and digital video multi-media production, readings, and research all require students to grow in their competency to manage their work digitally. Students in campus-based classrooms are challenged to learn material that is augmented through multi-media presentations by instructors. Not only will students learn through multi-media approaches, but also student knowledge will be broader and go deeper through enhanced opportunities to learn with technology as an aid. Many Kapi'olani students benefit from the flexibility that online learning gives them. " Synchronous discussion and developing my visual project were new experiences that will benefit me in the future since I plan to use PowerPoint and take more on-line classes." --Anonymous online learner, summer 2002. "I learned as much or more as in a classroom based course, and I could do it within my own time frame. Being able to take the course online definitely added to the advantage since I was on the mainland for 3 weeks!" --Anonymous online learner, summer 2002. "I like the flexibility of being able to study at home . . . and take breaks whenever I need to. There is still a lot of effort needed to keep current and more time management and self-motivation is required in an on-line course." --Anonymous online learner, summer 2002. "I was able to freely express myself online as compared to classroom-based learning. We were put in the hot seat to communicate with one another in the synchronous chat." --Anonymous online learner, spring 2003. "For English subjects, I prefer this kind of environment because it in no way inhibits my writing creativity, it seems to enhance it." --Anonymous online learner, spring 2003.
