Visual Arts Program (Special Programs)

The Visual Arts Program supports students who intend to transfer to four-year institutions to pursue their career goals in art, students who are pursing an A.S. or A.T.S. degree in New Media Arts, and those who are taking classes for personal enrichment.

The Visual Arts Program offers a variety of studio art, history of art, and New Media Arts courses. Art transfer students are offered the core art classes required for a studio BA or BFA at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. These courses also transfer to mainland art schools and universities. Media-specific studio courses provide the opportunity for all students to explore different means of visual expression. Computer art courses use new media technologies to produce screened-based graphics and computer animation. Painting and drawing classes help students develop awareness and control of visual form in two dimensions. Ceramics and sculpture courses focus the students' conceptual and technical skills in three-dimensional media. Photography classes offer camera and darkroom skills. Whether planning to transfer to a four-year institution, obtaining a New Media Arts degree, or taking classes for personal or professional enhancement, students are encouraged to develop their drawing skills while at KCC.

KCC's art students have been highly successful in transferring to UH Manoa, as well as to art schools and universities on the Mainland. Kapi'olani Community College's visual arts faculty members provide counseling for those students who plan to complete a studio or art history BA, or BFA in Fine Arts, Design, or Architecture. Students receive individual assistance in planning transferable course work, preparing entrance portfolios and completing the application process. Go to: UHM Art Department

KCC provides an Associate of Science degree in New Media Arts. This degree can be obtained in the following specializations: interface design, animation and information architecture. Go to: New Media Arts

Located on the ground floor of the art building, the Koa Gallery showcases local, national and international art work. Student exhibits are also featured throughout the year.

KCC students are enthusiastic about their visual arts studies.
