Emergency
Medical Services
Introduction
Emergency medical technicians give immediate care to critically ill
or injured people and may move them to hospitals. Two major kinds of emergency
medical technicians practice in Hawaii: Emergency
Medical Technicians (EMTs) who are trained in basic life
support, and Mobile Intensive Care
Technicians (MICTs) and paramedics who are trained in basic
and advanced life support.
Specific
functions performed by both EMTs and MICTs include maintaining the patient's
airway and providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). They also treat
shock victims, bandage wounds, aid in childbirth, and treat poison and
burn victims.
At advanced
levels, under the direction of a physician, they may administer medications,
advanced airway skills, and record and read electrocardiograms. They also
inspect and maintain ambulance and medical equipment. They are required
to keep up-to-date with new techniques and equipment.
