Nurse Aide Training (NAT)

The Long Term Care Nurse Aide training program is a 150 hour credit or non-credit course. This course prepares students to work in long term care nursing facilities, hospitals, and with additional training, home health care.

Description: Nurse Aides work primarily in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and home health agencies. This program will offer clinical experience in a long term care facilities.

Nurses Aides provide basic care such as bathing, feeding, toileting, turning and moving patients in bed, walking with various amounts of assistance, and transferring patients to a wheelchair or stretcher. They do simple procedures which include taking temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure and measuring intake and output.

Nurse Aides must be able to understand patients, understand directions, make themselves clearly understood, and be able to cope with physically demanding and stressful situations. A positive attitude toward working and learning is important.

Graduates from this program are eligible to take the American Red Cross Nurse Aide Certification Examination. After 6 months employment in an acute care or skilled nursing facility, a nurse aid may apply for the Adult Residential Care Home Operator's Course.

Certification: Graduates of this program are eligible to take the American Red Cross nurse aide certification examination to become a CNA (certified nurses aide). The pass rate on this exam for our graduates is almost 100%.

Employment Outlook: There is always a need for nurse aides in the clinics, long term care, and home health agencies. Average starting salary: $7 - $10 per hour ($14,000 - $20,000 per year). With experience: $10 -$14 per hour ($20,000 - $29,000 per year).

ARCH Offerings:

Nurse Aide Advanced Skills I and II. This 100 hour series of courses is for experienced nurse aides who will be allowed to do skills such as dressing changes, tube feedings and assisting with sterile procedures under the supervision of an RN. The courses run over a 3 week period.

ARCH. Nurse Aides who have 6 months of working full-time experience in skilled nursing facility, home care or a hospital, or have finished NURS 16 may enroll in the Adult Residential Care Home courses in preparation of operating a care home. Before opening the home, they will need a total of a year of working experience.
