Practical Nursing Program (PRACN)

In an announcement from the Nursing Department Chair on May 24, 2006- The Nursing Department will not be accepting applications to the Practical Nursing Program because the program is being suspending until further notice.

Due to changing industry standards and employment needs of our state, practical nurses are primarily employed in long-term care facilities, home health care, and outpatient clinics.

The Nursing Department is considering revising the curriculum to prepare its Practical Nursing sutdents for employment in long term care and community based facilities.

The Practical Nursing Program at Kapi‘olani Community College prepares graduates to pass the National Council of Licensure Examination for practical nurses (NCLEX-PN) and assume the role of the entry level practical nurse.

Description: The Practical Nursing Program leads to the licensed practical nurse (LPN). The LPN works in long term care facilities, hospitals, outpatient clinics, doctor's offices, and home care settings. In long term care facilities, LPNs can be charge or head nurses. Their work includes day, evening, night shifts as well as weekend and holidays.

Employment Outlook: There is a need for LPNs in all of the above mentioned health care facilities. The average entry level salary $13 - $15 per hour ($27,000 - $31,000 per year), with experience $14 - $16 per hour ($29,000 - $33,000 per year).

The PN Program Philosophy is based on beliefs about humans in health and illness, nurses and nursing, and teaching and learning.

The PN Program is approved by the Hawaii State Board of Nursing.
