| Hawaiian Skies – Astronomy in Hawai‘i - Ancient to Modern Times |
| This course is intended as an introduction to the study of astronomy in the wider context of history, thought, and culture with particular emphasis on its history in Hawai‘i. The course includes a survey of the stars of the “Hawaiian skies,” Hawaiian sky mythology, astronomy and calendars, Polynesian and European approaches to navigating by the stars, astronomy in 19th century Hawai‘i, and other topics. Participants can also attend an optional visit to the Bishop Museum Planetarium to learn more about the Hawaiian sky under the planetarium dome. |
| Instructor: Dr. Michael Chauvin has been a lecturer at the Bishop Museum Planetarium, a recipient, through the American Astronomical Society, of two NASA-funded research awards, a Resident Scholar at the Smithsonian Institution, and is the author of the critically acclaimed book “Hokuloa: The British 1874 Transit of Venus Expedition to Hawaii.” |
