Public Culinary Series

These series of classes are designed for those of you who are interested in learning proper cooking or baking techniques and skills. Classes are held in the culinary arts laboratories and lecture rooms. In most cases, you have the opportunity to prepare and produce certain foods, sample, and discuss methods and techniques with the chef instructor. The culinary series are modular. This means you may pick and choose classes that fit your personal interests. In order to ensure individual attention and safety, class enrollment is limited. To enroll, please call 808-734-9211.

Dress Code: As a safety precaution, participants in all culinary classes are encouraged to wear covered, non-slip shoes (e.g. tennis shoes) and comfortable slacks. Aprons or any other personal items may also be brought to class. The college, however, will not be held responsible, if such items are lost or stolen.

SPECIAL HEALTHY COOKING CLASS!

For individuals and their caregivers who are concerned about health, especially high blood pressure and kidney disease, it’s not easy to find recipes that meet dietary requirements while serving up tasty meals using Hawai’i regional ingredients. These classes will show you how. You will learn how to use farm fresh, local ingredients to prepare exciting gourmet dishes, based on the “D.A.S.H.” (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) eating plan. The DASH eating plan was developed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute through a series of research, to offer practical ways for maintaining healthy eating habits that will lower the risk of hypertension which is a primary risk factor for kidney and heart disease.

Cooking with a DASH of Aloha
Too often people think eating healthy means boring, bland, flavorless food. The recipes are specially created for local palate, using farm fresh ingredients. Come try this hands-on cooking class taught by a chef/ author of the best-selling “A DASH of Aloha” cookbook published by KCC. You will learn how to create variations, make substitutions, and enhance flavor without adding salt or fat. Foods that are good for you should taste good. It’s not that difficult. Let us show you how.
